Sea to Land 2025

abalone, volcanic sand, fabric, cardboard, hide glue

120 x 20 x 7cm

  • abalone, volcanic sand from Jeju Island

Is it water you see, or sand—an island, or perhaps the land itself?

From the roadside, abandoned abalone shells were gathered, washed, broken, and patiently reassembled in a slow, meditative cycle. Through this quiet persistence, the distinct colors of Jeju emerged. Sea to Land is a landscape shaped entirely by the inherent colors and textures of the shells—a place where fragments resonate to paint a contemporary portrait of the island.

Within this terrain, the island’s palette unfolds: the shallow, crystalline waters of Gimnyeong; the deep blues of Bomok-dong, cradling volcanic rock; and the storm-gray sweep of the open sea. Countless abalone fragments converge, holding the memory of Jeju.

“It’s an experimental performance by nature itself.”

Created for the exhibition Sea to Land at Toeun Gallery, this work features hydrangeas gathered from the fields of Jeju, a flower that signals the arrival of summer (June–July). Throughout the exhibition, the blooms perform a quiet transformation—shifting from peak vibrancy to the soft fading of their hues—enacting the passage of time from opening to closing.

Along the paths of Jeju, dandelions bloom and their seeds are carried by the wind.
These seeds carry strong vitality as they settle and bloom anew.
Perhaps that is why we blow on them, making wishes—
hoping that our yearnings will take root and come to life.

When these seeds gather and form a color,
it echoes the fogs often seen across Jeju Island.
Within the mist lies uncertainty and obscurity,
but perhapse because of this uncertainty
that we are able to hope beyond the fog.
