IDA series

2021

White stoneware, Brooklyn red, glaze, handbuilding

The inspiration for the 이다 /ida/ series arose with stumbling upon a historical photograph of women in Korea. In the past, these women and girls would skillfully balance vases on their heads while transporting water from the well to their homes. This evoked memories of the hardworking *ajummas carrying trays of delicious food through bustling market halls and along busy streets. As they passed by, the tantalizing aromas would waft through the air, leaving people salivating.

As a wandering mind, I relish in the meandering thoughts that a single stimulus can provoke. By adorning the Moon Child with elements that possess familiar forms patterns, or colors, I envision paying homage to the perfume of that era and evoking nostalgia.Although the act of carrying objects above one's head is not exclusive to Korean culture, it is a common sight in various other cultures as well.

My hope is that this recognizable image will activate the viewers' nostalgia and memories, allowing them to reflect on their own unique narratives when encountering these sculptures.

*ajumma: Korean word for a married, or middle-aged woman
